Is AI really stealing jobs, as much of the mainstream media would have it? E+T speaks to six engineers who have embraced the tech

Graduates are facing a particularly tough job market this year, with AI reportedly gobbling up the jobs they would have taken. And at the other end of the market, the brightest minds in AI are commanding sky high salaries.

Entry level UK jobs are down a third on levels of three years earlier – before the launch of ChatGPT. For years young people have been urged to study computer science – now stories abound of young coders struggling to find work, as AI takes on more of the graft.

Nearly half of all jobs over the next three years will ask for AI literacy, according to an AWS report (Unlocking the UK’s AI potential), and the UK is seeking ways to plug the skills gap. This summer the UK government announced an initiative to see 7.5 million workers – a fifth of the workforce – equipped with essential AI skills as part of its push to propel the UK as a leader in AI.

Universities and business schools are scrambling to provide AI related degrees. “If you want to master these technologies you can’t just study a couple of months and become an expert. You will need to study hard,” says Riccardo Ocleppo, founder of the Open Institute of Technology (OPIT) which offers online tech degrees.
