From sourdough to neural networks: Making AI easier to understand

Professor Rose Luckin is an expert on the use and impact of AI in education. She advises policymakers and practitioners about correct use of AI, and leads Educate Ventures Research.

“I ’m no Mary Berry,” says Professor Rose Luckin, but the University College London academic is a dab hand with baking analogies and there’s nothing a dollop of cream can’t do to explain the finer functioning of neural networks and many of the technologies that underpin AI.

If we – teachers, students, the general public – knew more about how user friendly chatbots and agents work, we might be more circumspect and smarter at using them, and it’s Luckin’s ambition to educate everyone.

“Just using AI to do things faster is useful but it’s not the future. The really important question is ‘How is this AI making me smarter?’”
